In just two and a half years, KOMPAS has gone from a small idea, fuelled with food and a love for exploring, to a mobile application available on both iOS and Android, having won multiple awards for innovation. Find out more about what pushed the team to taking a leap of faith into creating what they believe is the future of technology.
KOMPAS was started by two young explorers, spending a year abroad. Tom and Olivia explored Munich belly-first, chowing down on all that the food scene had to offer, before quickly expanding to exploring abandoned railway stations, street art in underground and hidden passages, and hesitantly sampling homemade vodka from a man in a hidden Franco-Slavic bar. They started posting their findings on a Facebook page and Instagram account, under the name Hidden Munich, and quickly this developed into a much grander idea; a city exploration application helping people discover the amazing adventures hidden in your own backyard.
It wasn’t all fun and games though. With both of them running on an average of four hours sleep a night, trying to balance university exams with late night pitch deck sessions and constant drafts of business plans, the fuel tank was running low; yet the idea was slowly becoming more and more refined.
It was at this point that Kurt joined the team with his keen beady eye, and a knack for fine design detail, producing a mock up that we were ready to shout out to the world about! With Doug joining and putting his powerful coding skills, working hard night after night at speeds that could break records, working through keyboards like no man’s business. Together we were a team that could rival the strength of the Hulk! Since then, we’ve continued to grow with every new crazy addition shaping the KOMPAS vision, each with our own unique perspective. From impromptu trips to represent the UK at a startup world finals in Thailand, to pitching to the great and good in Monaco, the team were practically forced to take each day as it came, adapting to circumstances.
It hasn’t been an easy ride, but we’ve certainly had many reasons to celebrate. We’ve scored a commercial partnership with London Midland, gained a paid pilot with Visa as a result of winning the Visa Everywhere Initiative, and won multiple awards for innovation. KOMPAS is proof that even with adversity and challenges, a young and developing startup can still come out with successes by understanding our customers, and constantly asking for feedback. KOMPAS is your pocket guide, to the world’s urban jungles.
